Progress update on Version 2 of GlobalTwitcher (2012-05-11)
Version 2 is now planned for release in June - this is a delay of some 10-12 weeks compared to the previously communicated release date. The reason for the delay is primarily the extensive work to get Clements checklist fully up-to-date (version 6.6) to allow all your records from version 1 to be aligned (some manual work will be needed from the user, e.g. to assign ticks for split species). Following this, when version 3.1 of IOC's checklist (which contains subspecies) is available this will be uploaded and aligned with Clements checklist - a user can then determine which default list she or he prefers.
We are however making use of this time to develop a number of enhanced features that will be made available gradually - these include e.g:
1 An improved and easy-to-use interface with one head menu and clear submenus
2 Help and FAQ sections
3 Species section easier to navigate with string search functionality speeding up searches and increased species info such as
> IUCN codes with embedded links for classified species
> Extinct species are included (also in the checklists and the statistics)
> Newly discovered species (SP coded) awaiting formal acceptance are included (also in checklists and statistics)
4 Your own My GT menu which as previously includes checklists but also planned for release in 2012 is
> A tool to plan your trips and then easy upload a trip report for you and your birding friends that builds your own checklist
> A possibility to upload your observations (and not only new ticks)
We plan to switch over to version 2 gradually - all data in version 1 will still be kept as a back-up. We apologize for the delay but hope that once released it will prove to have been worth while waiting for.
